The new R 976-E and R 980 represent Liebherr's commitment to achieving its zero CO2 / greenhouse gas initiatives. Also, the new models offer meaningful service cost improvements.
The excavators and power system are designed and produced by Liebherr in Colmar, France. The R 976-E 400 kW crawler excavator is supplied with 6,000 V power using a plug-in cable connection. They weigh between 90-100 tons and are available in both backhoe and shovel versions. Liebherr noted that the electrical versions have longer service lives when compared to diesel predecessors. The new systems have been tested in extreme conditions and met performance objectives.
The Liebherr R 976-E and R 980 SME-E offer users comfort and safety. They feature a spacious cab equipped with an automatic permanent air-conditioning and heating system while the exterior has a 270° camera system plus an armored windscreen and roof window.
Plug-in excavators are cheaper to run and maintain relative to a conventional diesel machine. Also, they are much quieter. This portfolio change is an example of how more construction equipment manufacturers are moving toward electrification and achieving their zero CO2 / greenhouse gas initiatives.
As more off-highway vehicles move toward electrification, equipment owners will be able to save money on parts and service given lower maintenance costs. Liebherr's announcement is one week after Hitachi and ABB announced an MOU to electrify mining machinery. Many offhighway manufacturers are investing in electrification and artificial intelligence. Kubota released a concept tractor controlled by AI last year.
